A ‘Guide
to Starting a Recycling Venture’ has been published by FEO for use
by non profit organisations and local government authorities around
Australia.
CEO of
Future Employment Opportunities, Peter Cox said today “The Guide is
based on the very successful Eaglehawk Recycle Shop which is based
on a partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo to reduce waste
to landfill while at the same time creating sustainable
employment”
Mr Cox
said “It is hoped that other communities can learn from the
Eaglehawk experience where the whole community can benefit.
It is different to other recycling models as it is the community
that takes responsibility for its waste but with the support of
Council.”
“Australia is amongst
the world’s greatest per capita generators of municipal
waste. Waste creates huge environmental problems including
greenhouse gases.
Recycling benefits stem
not only from savings in landfill space and the raw materials used
in primary production but also from substantial reduction in energy
usage”, he said.
“The
CRV, Community Recycling Ventures, aims to bring Council, business,
residents and people out of work together to implement a plan of
action. Eaglehawk has created a sustainable business
employing 14 people who are paid from the sales of materials.
The whole business operates from sales so it is a very cost
effective project for local government authorities” Mr Cox
said.
The
Guide can be purchased for $20 from FEO by phoning 03 54467046
“It’s a great investment particularly if you want to improve
waste recovery and provide sustainable employment,” Mr Cox
said.
